SWIMMING POOL TO RECEIVE MAJOR RENOVATION
The community center swimming pool has been experiencing tremendous leakage for
the last few years. Over the past few years underwater divers have been called
in to perform repairs to minimize the problems. This past year the situation has
deteriorated to the point where that is no longer an option. Divers spent 12 1/2
hours trying to repair the interior pool leaks. This summer even after repairs
large chunks of the concrete pool wall near the gutter has been falling off into
the pool creating returned leaking problems and also a safety hazard with
falling cement.
The CPRD board looked at options available and the best solution was to line the
existing pool with a PVC liner and make other necessary improvements. The board
has hired an engineering firm and the work has been designed and is currently
out for bid. The work will include necessary removal of all the concrete that
has been falling off the vertical wall and all additional patching in other
areas to create a sound smooth surface. The deep end of the pool will be changed
from 12’ to 10’. This will save water use, heating and chemical costs as it will
substantially decrease the volume of water in the entire pool. The minimum safe
depth for a diving section of a pool with a low diving board is 9’ so we are 1’
above the minimum requirement. The other advantage will be that lifeguards will
see swimmer more clearly in a shallower deep end.
In the process of lowering the depth of the deep end a new main pool drain will
be installed with new piping and valves to insure that we have a sound
no-leaking drain including new drain valves. Over the years there has been much
settling in and around the pool and it is very important to replace the current
piping to insure there are no leaks. It was also determined that the pool had
settled 3 ½” lower on the south side of the pool mainly the deep end. This
project will include installing stainless gutter inserts that will bring the
entire pool up to the same height.
After all these improvements are completed the last steps will be to install a
customized PVC liner that will not only eliminate the water loss but also will
have permanent lane line made of the same PVC material but of a dark color. The
new liner has one additional benefit of no more painting. That has been a very
large expense and will be a relief to no longer perform. September 20th at 3:00
PM bids will be opened for the work.
CPRD hopes to award the bid promptly to get work underway. All the work except
the liner and gutter work could be completed this fall. . There are only a
handful of contractors that perform this specialized work and they already have
some projects scheduled. Our completion date is June 1st. There is a penalty
clause that fines the contractor $500.00 per day if the deadline is not met.
However if there are weather related delays it is normal procedure to give the
contractor an equal amount of time to offset those lost days. .
There is no doubt we will have a delayed opening this year of the outdoor pool.
We have requested the use of the high school pool as an alternate location until
the community center pool is ready for the public. We certainly hope that the
time away from the normal use of the pool is minimal but the community needs to
know the reasons why.
Once this project is completed a nagging problem for the last 10 years or more
will have gone away and we will have a safer and more economical outdoor pool
for many years to come.
