Babe Ruth Baseball 2017
It’s been another eventful season. The Colstrip Sentinels started off losing their first 2 conference games. They then came back and won the Memorial Day Kick-off Tourney. The boys played hard and were rewarded with the trophy. The team played really well at the tournament. The Sentinels then went on a 5 game win streak. They finished the season at 6-4 overall and 3rd place going into the year-end tourney. The team played well and almost came back to win the tourney. They won the first game of championship 12-5 to force a second game. After weather delays and a power/light outage the team came up a run short 6-5 to take second place. There was a surprise pitcher, Ryan Craig, who stepped up in both championship games even though he had not pitched all season. The team called him their MVP for the tourney.
JT Baer led the team in Batting Average, pitching, catching and as a solid short stop. Julian Link led the team in Runs Batted In, pitching, catching and short stop. Anthony Oswald came along adding some big hits in key situations and played several positions in the field. DJ Buckalew became our catcher at the end of the season and was outstanding throwing runners out. Shay Wilkie was willing to play any position and did a fine job at all. Kyler Burton started off as an outfielder and moved in to play 1st base where he excelled. Rylin Burns played outfield and second base – got the first double play of the season for the team. Parry Allison worked hard and scored over half of the time that he got on base. Brady Walker pitched well, played third base and even caught for the team when needed. Dawson Hissom was another that played all over when needed but excelled at pitching this year. Garret Nash was the most interesting base runner doing anything he could to throw off the opposing pitcher. Ty Ator did a fine job pitching, second base and outfield as needed.
All in all it was fun to coach these boys this year and see how much each grew on and off the field. I hope they continue next year where they ended this year in bringing home the championship to Colstrip.
The year was successful due to the help of John Frank and Brent Burton. These two coaches put in a lot of time and effort to help make this a positive experience for all the boys. I would like to thank the CPRD staff for getting the fields ready for the season and every game. Also, thanks to Russ and Darla Davidson for announcing games and making sure we had umpires.
As for suggestions for next year, add uniform sizes to sign-up sheets so that boys can get uniforms that fit properly and possibly hold an official sign up day to get all those interested together with the parents. I would be more than happy to assist with an official sign-up day.
